Hummingbirds consume two thirds of their body weight every day to provide fuel for their fast-paced life. The food of hummingbirds includes nectar from flowers, which supply carbohydrates and small insects and spiders for protein and other minerals. Protein is a vital element of their diet particularly when feeding young.

Hummingbirds love diversity in their surroundings as shelter and source of food. They have a special attraction to the red color. Hence, to attract hummingbirds to your garden, you can select plants that have an exuberance of red flowers or shades of red, like fuschias, columbines, salvias, coral bells, etc. They are known to love hollyhocks, honeysuckles, petunias, flowering crab apple, and nasturtiums. Arrange a lot of nectar producing plants that flowers continually throughout the year and you will definitely attract hummingbirds to your garden.

Hummingbird's appeal for red color can get them into danger if your fences are electrified. In case your fences are painted red, change them to white or black so that the hummingbirds are not ensnared to them.

The feeders used should be clean and the sugar / water proportion should not exceed 1:4, the maximum concentration of nectar in natural flowers, and no food color should be added to the solution.

Solution prepared at home is much safer as the preparation is a simple process. Blend 1 cup of sugar and 4 cups of water together and heat the solution for a minute to impede fermentation process. After the solution is cooled, fill the feeder. The feeder can be decorated in red to attract hummingbirds to your garden. Never use honey or artificial sweeteners in the solution.

The feeder should be suspended in such a way that it can be effortlessly handled for cleanups and refill. If there is more than one feeder, space them apart. Shady locations are ideal to place the feeders.

Sanitize the feeder using hot water and vinegar and wash properly when changing the solution. The solution can be changed in 5 -7 days. October is the migratory time and the feeder may be kept full throughout this month to attract hummingbirds to your garden.
