Every job works better when we have the proper equipment. Gardening is no exception to this rule. In fact, it's almost impossible to garden without any gardening equipment. Obviously, the type of gardening equipment you use will depend on what size your garden is and what you're able to handle. Do you want to spend a lot of time out in your garden? Or do you prefer to have power equipment that will do the job with minimal effort on your part?
Many gardeners do just fine with manual equipment but all gardeners have some sort of cultivator. A cultivating tool can include both hand held tools or power tools.
Again, the type of tools you purchase will depend on how much time you wish to spend in your garden and what your personal gardening budget is. Simple hand tools include shovels, spading forks, rakes, trowels, bulb planters, and other simple digging tools.
These items would serve well to prepare your garden for planting. If you're planning to include some power tools to the above list you would want to include a tiller (many people opt to rent a garden tiller since it's generally only used at the beginning and sometimes the end of a gardening season).
If you have shrubs and trees then some form of pruning shears are a must. There is a great variety of types and styles of pruning shears available. If you're only going to be pruning small plants then a small hand held set will work just fine for your needs. For larger needs such as trees and larger shrubs you'll want a set of tree trimmers or lopping shears.
Hedge shears and pruning saws are also valuable to the gardener that will have a lot of trees, bushes or hedges to keep maintained over the gardening season.
You'll need to make sure you can get water to your garden. For small gardens a watering can might just be what you need. For larger gardens hoses and sprinklers are a must. Watch how the sun hits your garden and water at appropriate times during the day to ensure that your plants are given enough water to thrive.
Drip hoses are wonderful for delivering water to delicate plants without having to reset a hose daily. Simply place the hose in the garden and weed around it allowing it to soak the plants as needed.
If you're going to be down on your hands and knees weeding you may wish to invest in a kneeling pad to kneel on while you're weeding. An old cushion or pillow will also work just make sure that at least one side is water proof as you may occasionally be weeding in some moist soil.
To garden without any gardening equipment would be difficult. Many people enjoy getting a little bit dirty while gardening but everyone appreciates a little bit of convenience, even in gardening. Choosing your gardening equipment should be as big of a deal as choosing what seeds to plant and what sort of fertilizer to use in your garden.
